7 Primary Symptoms of Strep Throat- Full Guide

What are the Primary Symptoms of Strep Throat

Primary Symptoms of Strep Throat

Strep throat typically comes on suddenly. If you feel fine in the morning and can barely swallow by the afternoon, it is a major red flag.

    • Severe Throat Pain: Pain that starts rapidly and makes swallowing very difficult.

    • High Fever: Usually a temperature of 101°F (38.3°C) or higher.

    • Swollen Lymph Nodes: Tender, swollen “glands” in the front of the neck.

    • Visual Changes in the Throat: * Red and swollen tonsils.

      • White patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils.

      • Petechiae: Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth (soft or hard palate)

    • Headache and Body Aches: A general feeling of being unwell (malaise).

    • Stomach Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, which are especially common in children.

Strep vs. The Common Cold

The biggest clue that you do not have strep is the presence of typical “cold” symptoms. Strep is a bacterial infection of the throat, so it rarely affects the respiratory system in the same way a virus does.

When to See a Doctor

Since symptoms can overlap with other illnesses (like the flu or COVID-19), you should seek a medical diagnosis if:

  1. You have a sore throat with swollen lymph nodes but no cough.

  2. The sore throat lasts longer than 48 hours.

  3. You have a fever over 101°F.

  4. You see white patches or red spots at the back of the throat.

  5. Emergency: You have difficulty breathing or are drooling because you cannot swallow saliva.

The “Rapid Test”

A doctor will use a long cotton swab to take a sample from the back of your throat. A Rapid Strep Test gives results in about 15 minutes. If it’s negative but the doctor still suspects strep, they may send a sample for a Throat Culture, which takes 24–48 hours for a final result.
